AFOQT scores, composites and percentiles

Your AFOQT result is not a raw score. It is seven composite percentiles, each comparing you with a reference group of examinees. Here is how they are built and what they mean.

Percentiles, not percent correct

Each composite is reported from 1 to 99. A Verbal score of 56 means you scored equal to or higher than 56% of the reference group (DAFMAN 36-2664 A2.2). AFPC notes that roughly 1 in 100 examinees gets a Quantitative score of 1 even though they answered far more than 1% of the math questions correctly — a percentile measures standing, not accuracy (AFPC AFOQT FAQ).

Form T was normed against Fall 2014 applicants. The norms themselves are not published — which is why any score you see outside the official report, including ours, is an estimate.

Physical Science and the Self-Description Inventory don't feed any composite in the published table. Math Knowledge feeds five composites and Table Reading three — the two highest-leverage subtests to train.

Minimums and what boards see

Commissioning: Verbal 15, Quantitative 10. Pilot, CSO and ABM training: 25 on the matching composite (DAFMAN 36-2664 Table A2.1). Boards consider AFOQT scores as one of several factors. For pilot candidates the Pilot composite also feeds the PCSM score.

Superscoring

If you test more than once, your best score on each composite from any valid attempt becomes your score of record (DAFMAN 36-2664 A2.7). A retake can't lower an AFOQT composite of record — see retake policy for the PCSM exception.

FAQ

What is the highest AFOQT score?

99 on each composite — they are percentiles from 1 to 99.

Is 50 a good AFOQT score?

A 50 means you scored as well as or better than half of the reference group. It clears every published minimum; whether it is competitive depends on the program and board.

When do AFOQT scores come out?

AFPC posts results within about a week of receiving the answer data (DAFMAN 36-2664 A2.5).

Do AFOQT scores expire?

Form T scores (versions T1/T2 and T7/T8) are valid and do not have an expiration date.
