U.S. United States Marine Corps

Marines — ASVAB requirements.

The Marine Corps uses 4 line-score composites layered over the AFQT. The current Marines enlistment requirements page lists a minimum ASVAB score of 31 for standard applicants and 50+ for GED or nontraditional diploma applicants. Most infantry and combat-arms MOS lean on the GT composite; technical MOS (avionics, electronics, comms) lean on EL or MM.

The Marine Corps publishes a fixed catalog of four named composites — GT, EL, MM and CL — in MCO 1230.5C, and each MOS lists one of those codes with a minimum.

Common questions

Marines ASVAB questions, answered.

What is a passing ASVAB score for the Marines?

The ASVAB has no pass/fail mark — the AFQT is a 1–99 percentile, and each branch sets its own floor. For the United States Marine Corps that floor is AFQT 31 for a tier-1 applicant (high-school diploma), verified 2026-07-02 against marines.com (Enlistment Requirements). Clearing it makes you eligible to enlist; it does not by itself open any specific job, because jobs gate on line-score composites (GT, EL, MM, CL) as well.

Can you join the Marines with a GED?

Yes, but the bar is higher. Tier-2 applicants (GED or an alternative credential rather than a high-school diploma) need AFQT 50 for the United States Marine Corps, versus 31 for tier-1 — a 19-point gap. Tier-2 accession slots are also limited in number. Verified 2026-07-02 against marines.com (Enlistment Requirements).

What ASVAB score do you need for Marines jobs?

Across the 8 Marines jobs cited on this page, the AFQT floor ranges from 31 to 50. AFQT is only the entry gate, though: the number that actually decides a job is the line-score composite. The highest line-score requirement listed here is 0211 (Counterintelligence/Human Intelligence Specialist) at GT 110. Each job page shows its own minimum and the source URL it came from.
