HM Hospital Corpsman (HM)

Navy Hospital Corpsmen (HM) provide medical care to Sailors and Marines afloat, ashore, and with Fleet Marine Force units. The April 2026 MyNavyHR accession list gives general HM/5YO applicants four ASVAB routes: any one of three standalone combinations shown in the score cards, or GS + AR + MK + VE = 200 together with Coding Speed (CS) = 60. HM-ATF is a separate six-year program with different cumulative score gates.

Starting pay · 2026

What this job pays as a junior enlisted member.

Base pay is set by pay grade, not by job — every Navy enlistee at the same grade earns the same monthly base pay. These are the 2026 active-duty rates (3.8% raise, effective 2026-01-01).

Eligibility notes

What HM candidates should check.

  • For general HM/5YO in the April 2026 MyNavyHR accession list, meet any one standalone path shown above: GS + AR + MK + VE = 208; GS + MK + 2VE = 208; or AR + PC + MK = 156. The Navy AFQT enlistment floor of 31 is a separate threshold.
  • The same accession list publishes a fourth HM/5YO route: GS + AR + MK + VE = 200 and Coding Speed (CS) = 60. Both gates are required. Because this page's checker cannot safely model an AND condition nested inside four OR routes, that fourth route is documented here instead of displayed as a score card that could incorrectly treat 200 alone as qualifying.
  • HM-ATF/6YO is a different program, not another name for general HM/5YO. Its April 2026 entry shows three cumulative score gates: VE + MK + GS = 156, AR + WK = 105, and VE + AR + MK + GS = 210, along with additional physical and program qualifications.
  • The MyNavyHR Medical community page can publish score combinations for rating conversion, while the CWAY/CNRC rating list identifies recruiting-accession programs. Confirm the program on your classifier worksheet or contract; a conversion table and a new-accession table are not interchangeable.
  • Navy.com lists Hospital Corpsman candidates as needing normal color perception, vision correctable to 20/20, U.S. citizenship, and eligibility for a security clearance. A Navy recruiter and MEPS make the final medical, legal, and clearance determination.
  • After Recruit Training, Hospital Corpsmen attend approximately 19 weeks of Hospital Corps School at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, before assignment or follow-on specialty training.

What ASVAB score do you need to be a Navy Hospital Corpsman?

For general HM/5YO, the April 2026 MyNavyHR accession list accepts any one of these standalone paths: GS + AR + MK + VE = 208, GS + MK + 2VE = 208, or AR + PC + MK = 156. A fourth route requires both GS + AR + MK + VE = 200 and CS = 60. The Navy AFQT floor of 31 is separate.

Do older Navy Hospital Corpsman score tables still apply?

Do not assume an older secondary table applies to a current HM contract. The April 2026 MyNavyHR accession list publishes four general HM/5YO routes, while separate Navy sources can describe conversion or HM-ATF programs. Confirm the current program and score combination with a Navy classifier.

What is the fourth HM ASVAB route with Coding Speed?

The fourth general HM/5YO route requires both GS + AR + MK + VE = 200 and Coding Speed (CS) = 60. Meeting 200 without CS 60 does not satisfy that route. It appears in the notes instead of the score checker because both conditions must be evaluated together.

Is HM-ATF the same as regular Navy Hospital Corpsman?

No. HM-ATF/6YO is a separate six-year accession program. The April 2026 list requires all three published score gates for HM-ATF: VE + MK + GS = 156, AR + WK = 105, and VE + AR + MK + GS = 210, plus additional physical and program qualifications.

Why do Navy Hospital Corpsman score requirements differ between official pages?

Official Navy sources can describe different candidate paths. The CWAY/CNRC rating list includes recruiting-accession programs such as HM/5YO and HM-ATF/6YO, while the MyNavyHR Medical community page also publishes conversion information. Use the row that matches your exact program and confirm it with your classifier.

How is 2VE calculated in the HM score formula?

VE means Verbal Expression, which is derived from Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC). In GS + MK + 2VE, the VE value is counted twice; the resulting composite must reach 208 for that HM/5YO route.

How long is Navy Hospital Corpsman A-School?

Navy.com lists Hospital Corps School as approximately 19 weeks at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, after Recruit Training. Some Corpsmen then complete follow-on specialty or field-medical training for their assignment.
