Plain version

AFQT is the 1–99 score branches use first. Job line scores come after that.

The AFQT is computed from four ASVAB subtests: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge. Verbal Expression (VE) = WK + PC; raw composite = 2·VE + AR + MK; convert to a 1–99 percentile. As of 2026-06-23, branch floors are Coast Guard 36, Marines 32, and Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force at 31. Source: branch sites cited per row.

How is the AFQT computed?
  1. Step 1 — Verbal ExpressionVE = WK + PC. Add your Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension standard scores together.
  2. Step 2 — Raw compositeRaw = 2 × VE + AR + MK. The Verbal Expression component is double-weighted.
  3. Step 3 — Percentile conversionConvert the raw to a 1–99 percentile using the official 1997 Profile of American Youth norm tables.
  4. Step 4 — Branch floor checkCompare the percentile to each branch's active-duty floor.
